The new Hungarian government has pledged to clarify corruption cases from the previous term, recover misappropriated assets, and hold culprits accountable, according to DW and Euronews.

The Hungarian Prosecutor’s Office arrested two former ministers on Monday after lifting their parliamentary immunity, as reported by Euronews; the Tisza Party parliamentary group had removed the immunity of Balázs Hanko and Miklós Seszták on 28 September 2026, according to DW.

Miklós Seszták, one of the wealthiest MPs, is suspected of having accepted around €30 million in bribes tied to bus procurement contracts between 2015 and 2018, according to DW and Euronews.

Balázs Hanko was not part of the large-scale enrichment network of the Orbán system, but he is under investigation for illegally allocating about €50 million from the National Culture Fund between 2025 and 2026, and for handing out €46 million in cultural funds that could have financed campaigns, according to Euronews and DW.

The Purge Operation led by Prime Minister Péter Magyar entered a new phase with the arrest of the two former ministers, according to Euronews; political analyst Szabolcs Dull said the operation is accelerating and connecting with voters, while Magyar had launched the “Purgatorio” Operation at the end of June 2026, according to DW.

According to DW, the question now is whether the Purgatorio Operation will remain a spectacle or whether justice will investigate the cases independently and under the rule of law; Euronews warns that investigations could reach key allies or even Orbán himself, according to analyst Dull.
