Russia warned NATO that it could resort to nuclear action if the Kaliningrad exclave were severed from the rest of the country.
According to The Independent and Observador, Moscow indicated it would not hesitate to employ nuclear weapons to defend Kaliningrad should any NATO members attempt to isolate the territory.
The Independent reported that NATO spokesperson Allison Hart confirmed on Wednesday that Russia had sent a written message to the U.S.-led alliance outlining the threat.
The Independent noted that the Russian embassies in the United Kingdom and Ireland posted their statements on Telegram, while the embassy in Belgium released its statement through the Tass news agency.
