Prime Minister Andy Burnham pledged a major shake‑up for Britain, promising a “new social contract for the 21st century,” reforms to the electoral system and a reset of relations with European neighbours.
According to ABC News, Burnham told the audience, “I have given you what you often say is missing from politics: honesty, ideas and a clear direction for the country we all love.”
ABC News reported that some of the announcements in the hour‑long speech are expected to spark significant political fights.
ABC News indicated that Burnham suggested a new care service, likened to the National Health Service, would be free at the point of use and funded through taxation.
ABC News also noted that, if Labour wins the next election, Burnham plans to water down the pensions triple lock, an expensive guarantee that currently ties pension rises to the highest of inflation, wage growth or 2.5%.
