Moscow has once again bombed one of Kyiv’s bridges, despite the presence of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in the Ukrainian capital. A bridge in Kyiv was hit in a Russian attack on the city, mayor Vitali Klitschko said, soon after the arrival of the chancellor. Moscow had issued a similar warning in May, but leaders from countries supporting Ukraine have defied the Russian warnings and continued to make visits.
What could happen next
More than 4-and-a-half years after Russia invaded its neighbour, there remain no clear indications that a peace settlement might be possible.
